Hi Michelle, I have over 16 years experience in a variety of administration / assistant roles so do you recommend the use of websites such as ODesk and Elance as a means to get started? I just found your site yesterday and I’m loving it!!

Thanks so much for your question! I am really glad you are enjoying the site. :-)

This is a difficult question, because it really depends on the individuals circumstances. I would have to say if you are able to, try to avoid the ‘people for hire’ sites if you can, but if you simply intend to do a bit of freelancing here and there on a random basis, or you are totally stuck and need immediate work or you’re going to starve (dramatic I know) then you could place yourself on hire boards such as www.oDesk.com or www.Elancer.com. There are business owners regularly on there posting jobs which you are able to search and apply for - the downside is that the bidding wars generally mean that your services will sell for much less that they should, or you’ll be outbid by a cheaper alternative for the job - I have never used the jobs boards to pitch for work and only ever would if my situation was for any reason, desperate :-/

I can personally recommend a company called Live-Hire.com, their service is to match VA’s with clients, this is run by a business colleague Grainne; her e-mail is jobs@live-hire.com. Please feel free to mention Virtual Miss Friday if you do decide to contact her. She may be able to match you with a great first client.

Another option is to consider setting up your own business, this requires a lot of personal dedication and development, but you get more of a stable, professional way of working at the end, and I would be happy to assist you with this. Please take a look at my complete guide to getting started in the online service industry at http://www.TheVARoadmap.com where you will receive step-by-step guidance.

If you have any further questions, I am happy to help!
Michelle.
